Request-Related Organizations

There are three organizations involved in requesting and obtaining CMS data from our Center. For a summary of each organization, review the table below the diagram.

Medicare and Medicaid Resource Information Center (MedRIC)

National Institute on Aging (NIA)

Organization's Request Role

Manages the NIA study or survey data request process and authorizes access to both NIA study or survey data and versions of NIA study- or survey-linked CMS data. For more information on these NIA study or survey partners, visit the Partners: List page.

Contracted by NIA to review requests for the CMS data of NIA-sponsored study or survey participants, provide research-oriented versions of these data, and offer access to the Health and Aging Data (HaAD) Enclave environment for data analysis.

Contracts MedRIC to manage the CMS data request process for NIA-sponsored study or survey participants' CMS data and develop CMS research products, such as the HaAD Enclave.

Request/ Authorization Materials

Varies for each NIA study or survey partner, but typically includes request forms and a description of your research study.

  • MedRIC Project Services Agreement;
  • NIA Data Use Agreement (DUA) Form
  • NIA Study Data Authorization Materials; and
  • Research Project Information Form

NIA Data Use Agreement (DUA)

Your Tasks

Work with the NIA study or survey partner to identify the required data request materials, submit the materials to the NIA study or survey partner, and obtain partner data authorization.

Submit data request materials and forward NIA study or survey authorization materials to MedRIC.

Obtain an NIA DUA.

National Institute of Aging (NIA)

Organization's Role

Manages the survey data request process and authorizes access to survey data. For more information on these surveys, visit the Partner Profiles page.

Request/ Authorization Materials

Varies for each survey partner, but typically includes a description of your study and request forms.

Your Tasks

Work with the survey to identify the necessary materials required for a request, submit the required materials to the survey, and obtain survey data authorization.

Research Data Assistance Center (ResDAC)

Organization's Role

Under contract with CMS, assists researchers with requesting CMS authorization to access and use CMS data–including MedRIC's CMS data inventory.

Work with ResDAC to identify the necessary materials required for a request, prepare those materials, and finalize them.

Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS)

Organization's Role

Under contract with CMS, assists researchers with requesting CMS authorization to access and use CMS data–including MedRIC's CMS data inventory.

Request/ Authorization Materials

CMS Data Use Agreement (DUA) and Payment Invoice.

Your Tasks

Obtain a CMS DUA.

Your Fees

$2,000 per request for MedRIC's CMS data inventory

Medicare and Medicaid Resource Information Center (MedRIC)

Organization's Role

Governs rights to CMS data, contracts ResDAC to manage the request process, and ultimately approves or rejects researchers' requests to obtain CMS data.

Request/ Authorization Materials

MedRIC Request Form, CMS DUA, Justification workbooks, Survey Approval material, Data Licensing Agreement (DLA), and Payment Invoice.

Your Tasks

Forward all CMS DUA materials to MedRIC, execute MedRIC DLA, and pay Invoice.

Your Fees

$1,000 annual fee*, regardless of the number of data files, years, or requests in a given year
